School within a School
American International School of Budapest
AISB is currently hosting 75 Ukrainian students in a Ukrainian language school, with a further 50 students on the waitlist. The program ‘School within a School’ is run in the Ukrainian language and follows the national curriculum.
‘‘When the first refugee families started arriving in Budapest, we noted the significant number of children who had fled the conflict. To respond to the need, we worked with the teachers who had fled the war, primarily from Pechersk School International (PSI), Kyiv, an established CEESA and IB World School, to build a Ukrainian program on the AISB campus. The greatest need we have at this stage is raising funds to employ more Ukrainian teachers to work in the program to bring in more students. Also, we are working to support the families who have resettled in Budapest with essential items and some money to regain some independence.’’
‘‘We know that there are many educators around the world wanting to donate and make a difference. Additionally, we know that schools are looking for ways to direct their fundraising efforts. In giving to this program, all of the money will go directly to the teachers and families displaced by the conflict. The result will be that these children will have the opportunity to learn in their home language and continue to follow the Ukrainian national curriculum. Our sincere hope is that when these children can return home, they will not be disadvantaged by a disruption to their education. When these students first arrived in our community, they were visibly traumatized. Today, we see the return of their smiles and love of learning.’’ Brett Penny, Director of the American International School of Budapest
