Sustainability Education
UWC Maastricht
At UWC Maastricht, working together towards a more sustainable future lies at the heart of the school’s mission. In late 2020, UWC decided to install solar panels on the roof to reduce the school’s carbon emissions and contribute to a greener environment. Initially, UWC put up1074 solar panels and in a relatively short period of time, they were able to save around 46.000 kg of CO2, which equals planting more than 1300 trees. In April 2021, additional 174 panels were installed with the ambitious goal to produce 381.230 kWh per year, and to cut down further on the school’s energy consumption. The solar panels also play an important role in teaching and learning across various subjects, like science, physics, or environmental and sustainability studies. It allows UWC students to investigate the impact of renewable energies, such as solar, wind, or hydroelectric energy, and compare the results to non-renewable energy sources, like the burning of fossil fuels.
