Music: A Haven for the Weary Traveller

International School of Düsseldorf

With music staff hailing from the UK, USA, Canada, India, Australia, and Germany, and with a student body comprising more than 50 nationalities, the ISD community brings with it a variety of musical backgrounds, interests, and practices that are as diverse as the places they are from.

‘‘In the context of an international school - where students are in varying stages of their journeys towards language fluency - the ISD music rooms can be a haven for the weary traveller; a place where everyone is able to communicate without a word being spoken. We often see students shine when able to express themselves and share their creativity with their peers; an act that was made possible for them through the truly universal language of music.

After two long years of making music apart, the new school year promises more opportunities for us to be able to make music together. Students in our Elementary School Choir look forward to once again performing for our community - at Christmas markets and for the residents of our local nursing home.

In the Senior School, we’re thrilled to be able to resume our live community concerts. We’re also excited to continue our long-standing relationship with the Association of Music in International Schools (AMIS), giving our students the opportunity to travel to the orchestra, band, and choral festivals across Europe and perform with other students from around the world. We’re delighted to say that music at ISD is growing in all areas and - by allowing students to create and perform music from around the world - so is a deeper cultural understanding of each other.’’
