STEAM Education
Atlanta International School
Whether it’s developing an eye-controlled wheelchair or an app that helps doctors treat International patients, STEAM at AIS goes way beyond the normal classrooms. Atlanta International School provides many opportunities for students to follow their passions through co-curricular programs, internships, or a Lunch and Learn program.
The AIS Summer Internship Program provides Grade 11 and 12 students with a two-week summer internship or job shadow at businesses and institutions in the US or abroad. Internships help AIS students integrate and bridge knowledge and skills they learned at school to opportunities in the industry they are interested in. Through the Da Vinci Fellowship, AIS invites distinguished STEAM practitioners to school to develop cross-curricular workshops and learning experiences that combine excellence in science and engineering with diverse design and arts perspectives.
‘‘In traditional schools, most things are taught in silos. At AIS, we believe that teaching individual skills is not enough. Only the application of a mix of skills leads to real innovation. We mix subjects because most real-world problems can only be tackled interdisciplinarily, so students have to pull upon various subject skills to be successful.’’ Dr. Marsha Maxwell, Head of Technology & Innovation at AIS
