Antwerp International School

Antwerp International School (AIS) is currently in the final stages of upgrading and redesigning its STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) facilities. The new STEMzone is an exciting milestone for the school, as they believe STEM is a “language” that every child should be proficient in, regardless of whether they want to pursue an engineering or humanities-based career.

The €2 million construction project began in the winter of 2020 and will be completed this year. The STEMzone will include science labs, fabrication labs, maker-spaces, mathematics areas and, most importantly, common collaborative learning spaces. The aim is that the new area will develop into the heart of the campus where students and teachers work and learn together. The state-of-the-art facilities will increase excitement and interest in STEM subjects and will provide hands-on opportunities, expose the youngest students to STEM concepts from an early age, and encourage participation by girls. It will also emphasise the development of creativity, innovation, analytical thinking and collaboration through STEM studies, firmly aligning with the ‘STEM framework’ for Flemish schools.

The STEMzone will also go beyond serving its own community, as it will add to AIS’s successful scholarship initiative for students in the region, which is based on the vision for a diverse, intercultural community.
